With 2 year old son Riley in tow and another bub on the way, travel-loving parents, Kirianna & Lachlan Poole, have decided to slow things down on their latest adventure. As they embrace the camp-vibes in their 1962 Kombi on the ultimate road-trip through Australia’s mind-blowing landscapes, they shared with us some of the magical moments that have made this trip so special and how parenthood has shaped their travelling choices.

Who’s in your tribe?

Dad Lachlan, Mama Kirianna and little adventurer, Riley

You’re living an adventurous life in your beloved 1962 split screen Kombi ‘Izzie’. Tell us about what inspires your road-tripping way of life?

We are serious about travel but after exploring the world with Riley, covering 35 countries in his first year of life, we found that it was time to show him his own back yard - we wanted him to make connections with his homeland, go back to basics and experience “camp life”.

Although he isn’t aware of it yet, these are the building blocks that will help mould Riley’s life, giving him the opportunity to see and learn about his country’s heritage, geographical landmarks and how to live life to the fullest.

We love exploring with him, making connections as a family and overcoming challenges together - this trip has been by far the BEST time of our lives.

How has having a little one in tow shaped the way you approach travelling?

We have slowed it right down, which was a blessing in disguise as we have become more present in moments together and instead of ticking off the bucket list, we are soaking up as many milestones as possible, constantly learning from Riley and enjoying simple pleasures like finding shells and crabs on the beach and counting the stars before bed.

Share three of places you have discovered and fallen in love with...

Esperance - we returned there twice, we actually adored the whole of WA. They have the most incredible coloured ocean and it really is so special to witness the sun setting over the water.

The Kimberley - absolutely mind blowing! This is Australia! The richest culture and most ancient part of Australia is here - learning about the Aboriginal people was a big deal for us. I really wanted Riley to respect the heritage of his country. We visited the most magnificent heritage sites with ancient rock art and learnt about the local tribes.

Tasmania - a place of calm, everything about Tassie is “cool” even the weather! Gorgeous beaches, food and lovely people. We loved the free camping on the beach (especially at the Bay of Fires) and over indulging in seafood.

Any wise words of advice for other families considering travelling this way?

I truly believe travelling has a massive impact on your whole family, learning to appreciate one another, bonding and connecting with others. Riley has the ability to join any crowd without a shadow of doubt. He has learnt to be patient and discovered himself by doing new things like swimming safely in the waves, hiking through ranges and learning how to be camp safe. He certainly has an understanding of adventure.
