With its laid-back vibe, unspoiled beaches, secluded hideaways, and vibrant foodie scene, Byron Bay has an allure that attracts an eclectic mix of surfers, backpackers, couples and young families to enjoy a getaway in paradise.

It is home to Children of the Tribe, our Founder Emma McClean and her family, partner Steve and daughters Willow (7) and Coco (4). Here, Emma shares what she loves most about raising her girls, Willow and Coco, in our magical beachside town.

What do you love most about living in Byron with kids?

Without a doubt, our beautiful beaches. The water is warm enough to swim in almost all year round and we are so lucky to have so many unspoiled beaches right on our doorstep. Last summer Willow fell in love with surfing and both our girls love long summer days on the beach, playing with friends, exploring the rock pools and exploring all that nature has to offer.

We have such an amazing community of friends here who all love the outdoors and I love that the people who choose to live and raise their families in the bay are drawn to the carefree lifestyle.

Any family-friendly gems people should definitely know about?

Where to start, there is so much to experience in this town! Some of my picks would have to be catching the solar train from town out to North Beach (where we have just opened up our new flagship store at Habitat), mornings at The Farm (the doughnuts are out of this world) and we love nothing more than to finish the weekend with a bbq or sunset dip at Wategos or The Pass.

Describe the perfect day in Byron with your tribe?

We always start the day at the beach (once I’ve grabbed a coffee) and on the way home, head past Red Ginger for some dumplings and green tea. At home, the girls love playing on their ninja-warrior inspired obstacle course, and ending the day under our outdoor garden shower before cuddles on the couch - and a glass of wine for me!

Where is your favourite place to eat with your girls in the bay?

We can’t go past the Japanese banquet at Kura in Bay Lane and we love Byron Fresh for people watching. Miss Margarita is the best place for a sneaky margarita and the kids love the Mexican with a side of colouring in.

Top spot for a caffeine hit?

Sparrow, The Byron Bay General Store, Barrio at Habitat.

Favourite beach?

You’ll often find us our shady spot tucked away in the corner at Captain Cooks (between Clarks and The Pass)

Best time to visit?

If you’re looking for a relaxed break, visit outside of peak holidays times or the big musical festivals. I’d have to say winter is my favourite time of year, with its warm days, great surf and blue skies, and the fact that it’s quiet in town.
