With the cool change coming, we recently hosted a dreamy outdoor movie night for kids. The kids gathered in a boho garden setting, styled with a tipi, lights and layers of cushions. The evening was spent feasting on fruit, popcorn and toasted marshmallows with the little ones kicking back to enjoy the cosy vibes and watch a movie under the stars. It was the perfect evening.
Here’s how you can DIY your own outdoor movie night for kids.
Step 1 – Set The Scene
We layered the space with lots of cushions, rugs and warm blankets to create a cosy space where the kids could kick back.
The tipi from Wild Things Gallery definitely added a bit of wow and we styled it up with some fairy lights and our crochet bunting, adding some greenery with plants. With festoon lights hanging from the trees, the scene was set.
Step 2 – Healthy Food Station
Beautiful, healthy snacks are the key to happy little folk. Alongside the basket of fruit and platter filled with fruit, veggies and crackers, we created flavoured fruit water using strawberries, raspberries, orange and watermelon, served up in a glass drink dispenser with gorgeous little glass bottles and straws. Topped off with individual popcorn served in brown paper bags, the kids were set.
Step 3 – Light It Up
Whether its summer or winter, nothing creates an outdoor vibe like a firepit. Prepared with kindling, newspaper and a little help from firestarters, our small rustic pit was ready. Disclaimer: with young ones about, we had to be super diligent about parental supervision and keeping the kids well away from the edge. When we brought out a jar full of marshmallows on skewers for the kids to toast, there were smiles all around!
Step 4 – Movie Time
You’ll need a projector (our mini version is so easy to store) and something like a small stool for the projector to sit on. Make sure you’re not scrambling around looking for the right cord to plug into your laptop with the little ones desperately waiting for the movie to start!
For the movie screen, we used a timber clothes rack and sheet. You could also hang up a sheet or canvas using string and clothes line pegs.
For some extra fun, we put on a hand-puppet show before the movie started and had an old suitcase full of cool vintage dress ups with a disco light so the kids could get their groove on.
Step 5 – Kick back and enjoy!
With a beautiful garden space, cosy throws to keep everyone warm, snack to keep tummies full and entertainment at the push of a button, you’ll be all set to sit back, get cosy and enjoy an evening under the stars with your bebes.
