"We are so lucky to live where we do, on the edge of the Indian Ocean in Australia's southwest. We live for summer around these parts. We all love lazy days soaking up the sunshine, but I think during winter we can forget to head outdoors, into nature, into the wild. We forget how exhilarating it is to stand on the edge of the ocean, watching the storm clouds rolling in over the wild sea. Letting the wind blow away our worries, leaving you with a numb nose and rosy cheeks and a fresh outlook on life.
Last weekend we did just that. I loaded the car full of snuggly blankets and props. I stole our neighbours children for the afternoon and we headed a short way out of town to a little spot called Castle Bay. We had this magical place all to ourselves. We set up camp and imagined we were a million miles away from the rest of the world. For the shoot, I let the kids dress themselves. They styled each other and swapped clothes and accessories, they even planned some of their own shots. I loved hearing their opinions on what worked and what didn't. Little people with big ideas.
The kids had so much fun, howling at the moon and marching the beach with their flags. I could only keep their attention for an hour or so, posing for the camera is the last thing on a five year olds mind when there are rocks to climb and waves to chase. So we took a few photos then packed away the camera gear and just enjoyed the sunset.
Stop anticipating spring and planning for summer, they will be here soon enough! Get out into the wild, dance in the rain and make the most of our beautiful Australian winter.
